Club and Course News
End-of-the-day Friday report from Kalamazoo
Another weird start for me this morning, though it didn't hurt too much. Lost a disc as I was heading over to my start hole which was a long way from the parking lot. I got so caught up in the hunt that I barely made it to the hole before my tee. I took a five on that 600 plus feet hole after shankning a 15 footer due to no warm up. The next hole wasn't much better but slowly, I began to work back into a steady groove of par golf and finished at 58. That was two strokes better that my last round on that course. The Three Rivers course was good to me again and I was able to shoot a nice 51 which helped me climb back up in the K pool a little farther. This round was the most fun for me this week as the guys in the group were all similar in nature, we smiled, laughed, and applauded each other through each hole and every shot. It was a great display of sportsmanship and I think it helped us all play a better round. I am looking forward to playing in the semi-finals and hopefully can move up a little more. Robert Morris can be tough and you have to make the best of the shorter holes to score well. I am looking forward to hopefully being able to clean up some mistakes on Thursday. We will be preparing the car tonight so that we can check out and we will be leaving for home immediately after the final 9 and awards. Take good care and I will try to post one more time before we get home to good old eastern North Carolina.

Report from Joe, Thursday evening...
08/13/2008Today was another tough start though I didn't really have a bad round, many people had a better one and I fell on in the pool. I had a hard time putting my shoe on due to some serious swelling over night from the bee stings, it is really sore and I hope it goes down quickly. We had the afternoon free and I was in need of some time away from the golf scene for awhile. I planned a trip to Chicago to take Jessica and Rachel to the Lincoln Park Zoo. It was a great time and a beautiful day at the park. We saw lots of great exhibits and gardens. There was an air show by the Blue Angels going on overhead and that was a real bonus. Rachel enjoyed seeing the animals though she was most interested in the flowers and the seaguls that were feeding on dropped popcorn. We saw the Sears tower, Soldier Field, and the Home of the White Sox. We detoured on the way home to stop by a Lake Michigan Casino. I took in 20 bucks and came out with a lot more in just about 10 minutes, lets hope my luck continues in the morning as I reface the Meyers Broadway and Three Rivers courses.

Notes from Joe on Wednesday's play...
Sounds like Joe had more than his share of adverse course factors today. Also, the pools are shuffled.
Today was fun and challenging. I took a beating in the morning round, I was stung by ground bees and I scratched the corner of my right eye. In addition to the flora and fauna taking a bite out of me, I played some less than stellar golf with a lot of misfortune. As you all know, sooner or later you are going to get some bad breaks. Many came for me in the morning round at Meyers Broadway. After lunch, it was time to tee off on the Three Rivers Temp Course, which is located on the same property. I played much better on this course even though I didn't birdie a single hole in of the four short easy birdies. However, I was able to capitalize on some great drives and putting to knock down four great birdies on the rest of the course. I only took two fours and managed one of the better rounds in the K pool for the day. I finished 7th in the K pool and then came the great shuffle. All four 72 person pools are mixed together to sort out the pools again after the first four rounds. I am sitting at -12 for the week so far and 14 strokes off of the leader. I am currently in 36 place with the opportunity to move up with great play at the Robert Morris Course. I tee off again at 8am, Max and Dave are in the L pool and tee off at 1pm and John Moncrief is in pool M and will replay the two courses from today.

Thursday should be another great day of competition. We're looking forward to the results from all the eNC players. Good luck!
News from Joe, after second round Tuesday...
We received an update from Joe noble, reporting on Tuesday's play at AmWorlds.
Today was most difficult. I managed to lead the card over the first 9 holes but began to get into some trouble on the punishing par 36 back 9. The round lasted over five hours and was ,to say the least, mentally and physically exhuasting. We tee at the Meyer Broadway course at 8 and then travel over to the Three Rivers course for an afternoon round. These courses are lined with tall grasses kind of like Richlands but much, much, longer. There are also some wooded holes as well. These course have a mix of technical and long challenges. I got good news tonight, I won the EDGE skill shot field event. I was excited to find out that I will likely get a trophy as well as a 95 dollar payout. I will let you know on Wednesday if I am able to get back out to Timber Ridge. Jessica and Rachel are doing well, we spent so time at the park this evening on the play ground. They are such a blessing to me and are so supportive. Well, I better get some sleep, another long day ahead. I hope to make a move back up tomorrow, take good care!

Congratulations on winning the EDGE Skill Shot event! Good luck Wednesday.
Down east players are doing great in some very tight competition ...
Max Crotts had a solid Monday, tied at 28th in a field of 72 players, and had a great Tuesday round to move up to 18th, just 1-point off the 4-way tie for 14th. Joe's holding 9th place, just 1-point off a 4-way tie for 5th! Way to go guys!
08/12/2008Joe Noble tied for 3rd in Pool K after first day
Joe is off to a good start. We got a note from him, reporting on the first day's play and experience at AmWorlds. Keep up the good work Joe!
"Day one at Kimball Pines went very well. I am in third in Pool K and that means I get to play on the lead card at the Timber Ski Ridge Course. This is the most ridiculous course I have seen. Lots of long holes many up hill and then and long down hill. I shot some video up at the top of hole nine today, you can see for miles. Hole 9 is about 600 feet and you can reach it with a stable putter. Tonight we went to the Fly Mart where there were over 100 tables of disc golf merchandise. I didn't know that you had to have cash and didn't have much on me so I didn't get much. (that might have worked out best) Whatever you would want, it was there. We were filmed on sign in and during our rounds today. The videographer sais that Jess, Rachel, and I would be in the Wednesday addition of the Taste of Worlds segments featured on www.pdga.com website, so be looking and I will let you know if I see it first. Well, it is time for a shower and a little rest for Timber Ridge, I will be dreaming of great shots and awesome putts. More later, thanks so much for all of your support!"

Also of note, Max Crotts, John Moncrief and Dave George are in good standing, too. Eastern NC is well represented. Good luck guys!
08/11/2008Joe Noble checks in from Kalamazoo
The following is from email Joe Noble sent us Sunday. We'll post any additional reports here as we get them. Joe is in Pool K. So is Max Crotts. Wish our guys good luck!
"Well, I have practiced hard and long on the courses here and have done lots of driving, however, I still feel like I haven't seen or thrown enough. I anxiously await the the two minute horn so that we can get this tournament started. I am in Pool K as is most of NC Advanced and we will tee at 8am from Kimball Pines. It is a hard course to score low on, lots of flukie and small gaps that are must hits, some elevation change, but not anything ridiculous. The rough is crazy of the fairway, think Kinston pre KDK with lots of briars, downed limbs, lush growth, and tons of poison. Players meeting was held tonight in the downtown theatre, really really cool. I participated in the skill shot and putting contest today, got bumped out in an early round of putting and don't know the results of skill shot yet. Just wanted to say hello and keep you up to speed. I will try to e-mail again Monday night. It is a Kalama ZOOOOO of disc golfers around here. More later.......goodnight."

Many thanks to his sponsors for helping him make this trip a reality:
Work days yield results at Barnet
Over the past month or two, a number of club work days have brought out the creativity and resourcefulness among our membership. Several course improvements have been completed, or are near completion - many, just in time for the King's Cup III. One of the most immediately noticeable additions is an information kiosk near hole #1.

The kiosk was built and installed by club member Bill Thaxton with assitance from several other members. On one side, we have the rules of play and a map of the course. On the other side, we have space for notices (under glass), and a corkboard area for anyone to post notes of interest. (If you have notices for upcoming events, please let Joel Smith know so he can posted them on the kiosk.)
More course changes...
Additional course changes include replacement of the rusty inner chains on all goals. Also added were steps on hole #16 between the long tee-pad and the lower part of the hole. Players may recall some steep paths in this area than could be a bit tricky to descend. Thanks to Bobby Cox and crew for putting those in.
Hole #6, "The Skinny", has a mound on which the goal is placed. Over the past few years, increased traffic has eroded the mound. We've fixed that. The mound is now about 6 ft. tall and features a framed base to reduce erosion in the future. And you may find the path to goal a bit clearer. Its still a very challenging hole, just with a few refinements.
When the course was originally designed by Harold Duvall and Russell Schwarz, #15 had a long tee pad. Some long-time players of Barnet Park may recall the rubber mat that served as the long tee pad for a while. A new concrete tee-pad has been installed on #15 in its place. Thanks to Joe Noble, Bill Thaxton, Max Crotts, Mike Norris (of Raleigh) and others for all the effort that went into preparing and installing this pad. We hope you enjoy the addition.
Hole #18's hollow tree split and the top came down in a storm last fall. This caused a new and hard-to-escape thicket of crushed underbrush along the right side of the fairway. Christian Smith has spent hours and extensive efforts to clear out this tangle, while leaving it an interesting feature. It is once again playable, yet still an area best avoided.
And when you escape from the corridor of #18's fairway, you'll find that posts and a cable now fence off the goal area. This improvement is intended to keep people from parking cars near the goal. Many thanks to Bill Thaxton for making the posts, installing them and the cable. So far, we have not found any cars parked in front of the goal.
Speaking of goals, you'll now find a practice goal, "#19", in the grassy area in front of the picnic shelter. In addition to warming up, we've already seen this goal increase awareness of the disc golf course at Barnet park. Some have suggested this goal be used as park of a special tie-breaker hole for events. In any case, we're glad to have it as an addition to the park.
There are numerous other improvements around the course. We hope you find that they enhance your enjoyment of our course. There are some new additions on the way, and you'll notice them as you play in the next few weeks and months. Also, be sure to check the kisok and web site for updates and news about events at Barnet Park.

King's Cup II, Benches and More...
Don't miss the King's Cup II. The PDGA C-tier event will be held at Barnet Park, May 19-20th. We're expecting a full house, so sign up early online. Am players will receive an "Ontario" Roc in the player's pack. No player pack for pros this year, but the King's Cup II will feature a cash-added purse. This event will also be an NC Points Series event (50 points), so if you're in the running, you'll want to be here. We're making good progress and look forward to this being a really fun event. If you would like to be a hole or prize sponsor, let us know. Sponsors can sign up online, too. If you would like to volunteer, there are plenty of opportunities available. Drop us a line.
Boy Scout Builds Benches
The next time you're on the course, you'll notice new benches. Briley Taylor, of Kinston, raised funds, built and installed 20 new benches around the course as a project on his quest to become an Eagle Scout. Now, every tee pad has a bench. This should make a big difference during busy tournaments. Our thanks and appreciation for this great addition go out to Briley, his parents and friends who helped make it happen.
